Overview

Heat treatments are 100% effective because the enzymes of insects denaturalize above 42º C. This causes the stop of all metabolic processes and of the biosynthesis and the insect dies. The results have been recently published by the Federal Environmental Agency in Berlin with laboratory assays that show the following results:

“A 30 minute exposure at 45º C or 10 minutes at 50º C is enough to eliminate all insect stages”

No chemical exposure. Due to good air circulation it’s an economical alternative to fumigants or other control strategies. Treatment

100% Effective, 100% Environmentally Friendly

Not only humans but many insect species use grain (seeds) and food products done with them and with cereals, as a fundamental part of their diet. An example of these insects are the weevils (Sitophilus spp), flour moths (Ephestia spp and Plodia spp) and the flour beetles (Tribolium spp), amongst many others.

Insects proliferate at temperatures between 15 and 35º C, but at temperatures above 45º C all the insects stages (including the eggs) die very quickly. Insects can’t reduce their body temperatures using respiration and transpiration. When exposed to this temperatures, insects will die due to enzymatic and protean coagulation.

Since the ancient times, heat has been used to control pests. Some new systems have been developed recently in order to achieve high temperatures in exteriors and introducing heat inside buildings and fabrics using special air conducts. This system shows many problems, especially because it’s difficult to ensure that all the areas inside the building/fabric are exposed to the desired lethal temperature (this can only be achieved by increasing the air temperature, which can harm electronic equipments, for example)

ThermoNox bases it’s success in the fact that we just must heat the air that surrounds the interior of the zone that is to be treated, and therefore, we don’t need to achieve very high temperatures to ensure that all insects stages are eliminated. ThemoNox heaters create an airflow inside the area where the treatment is being done, so we can ensure much less power consumption.

During treatment, temperature is controlled directly. We monitor each and every heater used during treatment and we can control automatically the temperature of the airflow, that’s why we can ensure big power savings while also being effective in controlling pest,s without needing to increase the temperature of the treated area to very high levels. We use heaters in a way that we can ensure that we achieve the right temperature. By using different heaters we can treat all areas, even cracks and crevices, holes, etc., where insects could try to find shelter.

Each heater has been designed in a way that heated air is transferred directly to the floor. This is a great advantage because insects that might be hiding inside machinery, conduct joints, electrical wire systems, etc., will try to escape to the floor running away from the heat. But they won’t be able to escape, they’ll also be eliminated on the floor.

How to

We just need to heat the air in the area that’s going to be treated. Therefore power consumption is much lower when compared with other thermal treatments. By using different heaters, we are able to detect the cold spots/areas and direct heat directly to those zones. There’s no place for insects to hide.

Thermal treatment consists in:

  • Heating phase. Insects thrive at temperatures between + 15 and + 35º C. At temperatures around 45º C we can eliminate all insect stages including larvae and eggs in just a few hours, due to protean and enzymatic coagulation. We start by heating slowly the air till we reach around 50 – 60º C. this way we avoid damaging machinery, structures, etc..By using mobile heaters we ensure a proper distribution of the temperature.
  • Maintenance phase. Once we have reached the desired temperature (50 – 60º C) we will maintain it for around 10 – 40 hours. This allows us to ensure that even the smaller crack or crevice is also treated. We can easily control the temperature using laser pistols used for temperature measuring. When a cold spot is detected, we simply redirect the airflow by moving the heaters. This way we can ensure that we reach the desired temperature even in areas that might be isolated due to the presence of furniture or machinery.
  • Cooling phase. Once treatment has ended, heaters are turned off and the air, furniture, machinery, structure, etc., slowly recover their normal temperature. This way we avoid the damages that could be produced by a very quick change of the temperature in the treated area.

Efficacy

The advantages of using ThermoNox include:

K9 Teams For Bed Bugs

Overview

The first and more difficult step to eliminate a bed bug (Cimex lectularius) infestation is finding them. Even though it can be relatively easy to find adult bed bugs, especially in heavy infestations, finding nymphs and eggs can be virtually impossible. Using her sharp sense of smell, our dog Melody, has been trained to detect bed bugs, being very quick and efficient. Combining her talent with efficient treatments we can provide the most intelligent solution to get rid of a bed bug infestation.
Bed Bug dogs have been used for:

  • Inspecting areas where there’s a suspicion that bed bugs might be present. Early detection is crucial
  • Inspecting adjoining areas to infested rooms to know if they are also infested
  • After a treatment is provided bed bug dogs can carry out inspections to verify if the treatments has been successful.
  • After a treatment they can be used for inspecting adjoining rooms to detect if bed bugs have been able to move from the treated area to another close room.

Treatment

Our dog Melody has been trained using the same technology and programs used in dogs that have been trained to detect explosives, drugs, wood destroying insects. Melody is the first dog trained to detect bed bugs in the Spanish territory. Her trainer , in Germany, has won many international awards and her keeper in Spain, has been properly trained and keeps Melody fit to perform her job.

Once Melody has detected through their odor, the presence of bed bugs in a room, she will just sit and pinpoint the area where she’s found them. She won’t bark.  (See TVE News Video)

If this happens, we will carry a visual inspection of the area and indicate the customer where the dog has found bed bugs. We can then recommend and perform the best treatment possible to get rid of the pest. (link to Bed Bugs)

How To

Our dog Melody and her keeper are a K9 team that will work together to perform the best possible job. Melody’s keeper will contact you or the person you have designated.

a) They’ll work room per room following the order you’ll have designed for us: rooms were bed bugs have been found in the past, rooms were there’s a suspicion that bed bugs could be present and any other area you might think could hold bed bugs.

b) The inspection will be done thoroughly covering the whole area of the room. This inspection will last around 3 – 5 minutes approximately. The areas where bed bugs are more often found will be inspected (mattress, boxspring, headboards, telephone, etc.) but none will be discarded.

c) If Melody detects through her sharp sense of smell that bed bugs are present she will simply sit and pinpoint the area where bed bugs have been found. She won’t bark.

d) Melody’s keeper will take a close look to the area and will write down where bed bugs have been found.

e) When Melody has detected the presence of a bed bug infestation the adjacent rooms, the above and below ones, should be inspected to check if the pest has spread beyond the room where the infestation has been confirmed.

f) We perform this preventive strategy on hourly bases, the cost is per hour of work of the K9 team. The dog has to rest frequently if we want to maintain her efficacy. In the case that many rooms have to be inspected we might have to do it in more than one day.

g) Once the inspection has been done, if no bed bugs have been found, Melody’s keeper will contact you to plan the next service, this way you’ll be sure that all rooms are inspected on regular basis.

h) If our K9 team detects a bed bug infestation we will coordinate with you to plan the best control strategy to get rid of the pest. Our technical team will explain the different possibilities and perform the best possible treatment for each situation. (link to Bed Bugs)

Efficacy

Bed bug dogs are more efficient, more economical, less disruptive and quicker than any pest control operator or expert in detecting bed bugs. Specially on initial stages of an infestation or when there are just a few bed bugs in the area, bed bug dogs, thanks to their sharp sense of smell, can detect this little insects.

They can detect all stages of bed bugs: adults, nymphs and eggs while for humans this is virtually impossible. Of course, dogs have to be properly trained and Melody has been trained by one of the best dog trainers in Europe, winner of many international awards all over the world. Melody’s keeper has been properly trained to continue and perform continuous training to always maintain her efficacy.

Modified atmospheres

Overview

Many pests affect stored products such as flour, rice, tobacco, cocoa, pet food, etc. When these pests are found in different areas of a facility or even when they are in just one production room or a warehouse, control is needed. There are different possibilities to control structural pests, being heat, ThermoNox, the most efficient of all. But many of these techniques can’t be used upon food products. According to Spanish laws no insecticide is allowed to be used on food products and in food processing areas. What can be done then apart from just throwing the infested food product?

Modifying the atmosphere (Vacuum + inert gases or CO2) is the answer to this question. According to many studies when vacuum is used, oxygen is removed and insects die. After vacuuming we can add an inert gas or CO2 to speed up the process without harming the food product. Also fumigation could be done but many resistances have been documented to Phosphine and other gases. Also, more and more, in European countries, regulations regarding the use of toxic gases are stricter every day. There’s also a potential risk to affect humans and non targets, which could easily be avoided by the use of other technologies such as Modified atmospheres.  The use of toxic gases should be restricted to closed areas or areas that are apart from transit of people and non target animals. Regarding the use of other gases different from phosphine, new regulations are appearing nowadays and some of them will be totally ban the use of some fumigants in food processing areas or directly over food products.

The use of chambers with modified atmospheres is not new, but is expensive since special chamber have to be build to contain the product to be treated. Our technology is designed to treat on site any volume of foodstuff making this kind of treatment a not expensive strategy, convenient and easy to use.

Advantages of the use of Modified Atmospheres:

  • No influence on Quality, Color and Taste of the exposed products
  • 100% non-toxic treatment
  • No residual, after opening the products can be used immediately.
  • Reduced health and safety compared to chemical fumigations
  • Independent of ambient atmospheres
  • Can be retrofitted in existing production processes
  • Eradicates insects in all development stages: egg, larvae/nymph, pupa, adult.
  • No resistance has been ever observed

Our vacuum systems are designed to reduce the oxygen level to an amount above 85%. We can reduce even more the oxygen content but this could affect, in several cases, the shape, resistance or stability of some food products. After reaching the desired vacuum level, we flush with inert gases or CO2. The atmosphere is totally changed and insects die. This technique can ensure a total elimination of all insect stages found in grain, foodstuff, etc..

The control of wood destroying organisms, especially common cork (Anobium punctatum) using modified atmospheres is also possible. The principle is the same and the insects (all stages, egg, larvae, pupae and adult) die within the wood due to a lack of oxygen. This is ideal for furniture, or wood objects. Treatment

We offer to ways of doing modified atmospheres treatments:

– Modified Atmosphere  Packaging. Once the product is treated, for example,  in a vacuum chamber or just when it’s packed (in big bags or any other shape of container) we can store it as long as we wish using our modified atmosphere packaging system. With this technology we can:

  • Control Moisture Content,
  • Temperature (the thermal conductivity of the product is low and the vacuum reduces the transfer of heat by convection, this will help us protect the product inside the bag),
  • Partial pressure (the partial pressure of oxygen is reduced to approximately 2%),
  • Inert gas or CO2 Flushing (will help reduce the remaining oxygen inside the bag), Inhibits aerobic microbial growth. This will help us eliminate insects that might be in the stored products, and be kept insect free for a very prolonged time.

– Vacuum Chambers. We can design a vacuum chamber that can control temperature, level of oxygen and can introduce small amounts of Nitrogen (flushes). The combination of vacuum with Nitrogen will leave a small remaining amount of oxygen that will eliminate even the most resistant species to low oxygen conditions, such as the tobacco beetle (Lasioderma spp). Temperature and humidity are also very important aspects since at higher temperatures, higher metabolism insect rates. With low temperatures insects start to hibernate and eggs won’t develop to the first larvae stage. Spiracles of insects won’t open and the intake of toxic, in this case, low oxygen conditions will be greatly reduced. With temperature being controlled to our needs we can speed up the process and insects will die faster.

Method

Modified atmospheres are the best answer to the infestation found in food products, grain, or raw materials in general. Also in the case of many wood destroying insects, especially in the case of furniture or wood objects. With heat we can treat structures, machinery, etc., and by modifying atmospheres we can treat the infested products or protect products that could be infested during storage or transport.

The use of biocides in food stuff is strictly forbidden (even in food processing areas if talking about general treatments). The only possibility when using chemicals is the use of highly toxic gases. But many resistances have been described in large variety of insects to some gases and many considerations are being taken by governmental agencies in food processing areas in the case of others.

Vacuum + Inert gases or CO2, it’s a clean system, no pesticides are used and there are none of the hazards related with the use of toxic gases. It’s a cheap technology widely used in the food industry, although in this case we can treat very big volumes and in site. Once the treatment is performed, the goods can be stored for as long as we wish, occupying less space (due to the non presence of air inside a bag), and if the product is needed it can be used immediately since nothing is added.

We can use this technology in chambers designed especially for you or we can do it in your own house with our special packing technology.

Efficacy

There’s no doubt that the use modified atmospheres is effective. It has been used for a long time to keep stored food products, especially after harvest. Although insects have developed special strategies to reduce their exposure to pesticides, gases, etc., a few days of exposure to a non oxygen environment will lead to the death of all insect stages.

We can vacuum in chamber when  necessary but we can also do it in your home, warehouse, facility. All we need is a special plastic (multi-layer film), a very small portable machine and an air compressor. Como se comprueba, no es necesario someter a las cdhinches a una temperatura superior a 45º C durante más de media hora, aunque como garantía de servicio y eficacia, es esta la temperatura que conseguimos gracias a la cámara de calor “Sleep Easy”.

Esta cámara de calor permite realizar tratamientos térmicos por calor en zonas donde no se dispone de 380 voltios trifásicos y es ideal para tratar viviendas particulares, habitaciones de Hotel, etc..

Con este tratamiento ya no es necesario eliminar colchobnes, somieres, muebles, etc., ni es necesario adquiriri fundas especiales para los colchopnes, Nosotros nos encargamos de construir en la misma zona afectada la cámara. Colocamos los muebles y elemtnos infestables en ella, y realizamos el tratamiento. Para garantizar la eficacia total del tratamiento en las zonas que no pueden tratarse dentro de la cámara (enchufes, zócalos, grietas en paredes, armarios empotrados, etc.), podemos utilizar dos sistemas ed control:

  • Uso de tierras de diatomeas. Con este sistema garantizamos un tratamiento totalmente no químico de la zona. Las tierras de diatomeas tienen un efecto desecante que afecta a los insectos expuestos a ellas(se reduce la humedad ambinental lo que llega a producir la muerte del insecto) y un efecto abrasivo (al entrar el insecto en contacto con el polo de diatomeas se impregna de él y le produce la muerte al no poder usar los espiráculos para respirar normalmente).
  • Uso de biocidas químicos. En este caso, preferentemente usaremos polvos insecticidas que unen al efecto abrasivo de las tierras de diatomeas el efecto insecticida del biocida que incorporan.

Las técnicas de calor son las únicas que garantizan la eliminación total de una plaga de chinches sin necesidad de repetir tratamientos siendo además, estrategias de control totalmente respetuosas con el medio ambiente y la salud de las personas y los animales. Les ofrecemos, además, la posibilidad de realizar tratamientos de habitaciones o edificios completos con nuestro sistema exclusivo ThermoNox y el uso, para saber si están afectados por una plaga de chinches, de nuestro equipo canino específico para la detección de chinches. Como Hacerlo

Nuestro equipo se desplazará hasta su domicilio con la cámara plegada, así como con todos los accesorios necesarios para su correcto funcionamiento. Una vez allí, ensamblaremos la estructura e introduciremos  sus objetos de tal forma que el aire caliente pueda circular y distribuirse de forma homogénea  por toda la cámara.

Por regla general se introducirán primero aquellos objetos que con mayor probabilidad puedan estar infestados o ya lo estén. Comenzaremos por el cabezal de la cama, somier, y colchón; a medida que vamos inspeccionando los posibles restos así como cualquier indicio de infestación. Es de gran importancia desmontar todos aquellos elementos, por más pequeños que sean.

¿Qué objetos no pueden tratarse con calor?
La mayoría de objetos eléctricos no deben ser introducidos en la cámara ya que el calor podría dañar el correcto funcionamiento de éstos; así como pinturas, camas de agua y ciertos plásticos.

La ropa de cama, cortinas y cualquier otro elemento que pueda lavarse y secarse se deberá realizar con este proceso ya que si lo introducimos en la cámara estaría ocupando espacio innecesario y creando barreras térmicas que impidan la correcta difusión del calor.

Este primer paso puede durar 60 minutos aprox.

El tratamiento consiste en que una vez esté lista la cámara, se activarán unos calentadores que irán aumentando la temperatura ambiental mientras que los ventiladores la distribuyen por todos los espacios no dejando ninguna zona donde los insectos puedan esconderse. Para alcanzar la temperatura óptima de 50°C y eliminar la plaga dejaremos la cámara funcionando 120 minutos.

Finalmente abriremos la cámara para que descienda progresivamente la temperatura ambiental interior así como la de los objetos de esta manera evitaremos producir daños debidos a los cambios bruscos de temperatura. En caso necesario, repetiremos la operación tantas veces como sea necesario para tratar todos los objetos que puedan estar en riesgo.
