A biofilm is the association of microorganisms adhered to a surface inserted in a matrix of exopolimers. Most of the microorganisms are able to stick on inert surfaces. There are 3 phases:
Once the microorganisms are attached to a surface they start to multiply and excrete exopolimers. This exopolimers protect the microorganisms, acts as a food reserve, acts like a trap to organic and mineral material, and acts also as an anchorage point.
